Shutterbug visits J. Luxe

Tuesday as I drove to work, other than dwelling in my shallow contemplations (like, the Cartier Love bracelet) I thought about all the creative people in my life. (Man, I'm lucky). Along with the creatives, I realized I have an equally strong presence of business-minded individuals in my life who balance it all out.

We're on our way to something great and this is how I know it.

My friend Janelle is just as talented as she is striking. She recently earned lots more admiration from many of us when she quit her long-time job to pursue her photography business. I hadn't seen her in a couple of weeks so she stopped by Tuesday to give me an update on her crazy life...the visit wouldn't be very "Janelle" of course, unless the camera was present.

Here is the product of talent at its most natural, effortless state. I love these necessarily unnecessary photos of our shop--as simple as a kiss to say hello.

Look Good Naked

J. Luxe is teaming up with local CrossFit gym, The Human Laboratory for their Look Good Naked weight loss challenge.

The competition starts on January 23rd and ends in March. Entry fee is $50 and it is open to everyone including non-members.

The Ides of Fall

I usually kinda want to decorate a pumpkin in the fall but this year my wants have bloomed into uncompromising needs. I mentioned it to my lover boy last night and after that, I haven't been able to stop researching decorating ideas. Little does he know, he's got a fun project ahead.

First, there was the cutest idea of studs and painted faces on multi-colored pumpkins (via Mr. Kate) then I see this other fantastic idea of melting crayons and stamping them on (also on Mr. Kate)... BUT THEN my friend, Janelle, posts a cute f-ing photo of her pumpkins sprayed in metallics (!) That's pretty much when the obsession began.

I kinda like the idea of not having to get all up in the pumpkins, feeling the gooey texture (even though I secretly like it) and making a horrid mess. I will post pics as soon as my pumpkins are done!

After a couple of weeks of back and forth with the AMAZING Viva Creative team, we've finally picked a logo for J. Luxe Boutique!

Mando came up with a few brilliant designs--some simple, some with monograms, and some handwritten options. Surprisingly the handwritten ones were the absolute fan favorites--no question about it. He suggested we'd sleep on it and take a look at our options for a few days, that way, we would "just know."

Well, he was right to say the least.

The personal thing about the logo is that it's my handwriting. Mando had me send his team pages and pages of capital J's, lowercase j's, L's, "uxes," and so forth. When I called him today to give him our final decision, he admitted this was his favorite too.

Here it is--I hope you all love it as much as we do!

Hello all! We stopped by J. Luxe this weekend and we've already made some serious progress! The carpenters have built the frames for the dressing rooms, clothing racks and additional shelves throughout. My dad has gotten really involved in the whole process and we couldn't be more grateful!

Unfortunately we're still waiting on the city for the plans. As soons as they approve us, we can start on the more substantial construction, ie., windows, plumbing.

Leonard, the incredibly talented interior designer we're working with, is having some of our old furniture reupholstered. He said we were going to "whore it out," and I loved that! Couldn't have said it better myself.

We're still receiving some fantastic merch. There are some rose gold stackables I can't wait to wear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhh!

We officially started tearing down the place where J. Luxe will soon be! The carpenter was so gracious and personable! Life's easier when working with nice people! We also met the lighting specialist, Mary, of Designer's Mart. She brought her boss along. I showed her photos and we told her more-or-less what we wanted. She was ecstatic and had a TON of suggestions!

It's so amazing to see it all start to come together. I feel like I'm dreaming!

I'm pretty sure all of Cincinatti hates us right now...It'll all be worth it when we're done!

Happy Monday: A quick update and weekend recap

Hello all! Hope you had a great weekend! Farzad invited me to his mom's birthday party and they served a pretty fantastic Persian spread! We had a little too much wine and a little too much Patron but there are absolutely no regrets!

On Saturday I watched "Factory Girl" with Sienna Miller and Guy Pearce and thought it was fascinating, albeit sad--can't believe she died before she was 30! On the upside, I did feel like downing martinis and over-accessorizing a la Edie Sedgwick! She was (and still is) such a style icon!
We've picked up the city plans for the store, made corrections, and have taken the plans back for approval! Please keep us in your prayers as we go through our 2nd (and hopefully last) try! On an even better note, we get to see what Mando at Viva Creative has created for our logo! Can't wait to share the final pick with you guys!

In our Shopping Cart: Vintage Chests, Chandeliers and Cowhide Rugs

This weekend was unintentionally a productive one. My mom had a minor leg surgery so while she rested, we pulled out the j.luxe plans and sketched out our ideal space planning goals. My dad sat around and listened as he'll be helping with the construction (thank G).

I ordered some jewelry displays, garment bags, body forms and other necessary stuff I've been putting off. And on Sunday, mom, aunt and I went shopping for furniture!

We found a couple of AMAZING vintage chests and an absolutely flawless cowhide rug I can't wait to share with you all! It's got light shades of grey, brown and nude! I love the look of animal skin with chandeliers--which we're still searching for! Aunt Susy has a beautiful vintage chandelier in the foyer of her home she said she'd be willing to donate to J. Luxe!! So Exciting!

Chicago wasn't anything less than I expected--amazing! My friend Steph had a beautiful wedding, I got to catch up with friends, see the sights and even catch some rain which wasn't too bad considering the drought we've had in El Paso.

On my way there I watched the infamous street art documentary, "Exit through the Gift Shop," and was inspired to look out for such art. (This explains the random sticker pictures). If you haven't watched yet, you must soon!!!

A lot of you have been asking the status on j. luxe...So far, we've gotten all the plans for remodel finished and have recently submitted them to the city for approval. In the meantime, we're receiving and sorting inventory, picking out decor ideas and patiently waiting for the big guys to give us the "go ahead" so we can start making a fun mess!

I think we've agreed on a color palette and style. We love eclectic decor so we're trying to incorporate both traditional and modern elements, i.e., chandeliers, wooden tables, lucite furniture, wall art. Here are some images I've found that sum up these elements beautifully.

After months of [somewhat] quitely planning the launch of a lifelong dream, I've decided to share some special news. J. Luxe blog will soon evolve into a clothing boutique! We've leased a dreamy little space on the corner of Cincinatti and Stanton--the soul of Kern Place!

This is the space now--it was formerly a gift/custom card shop called Homebody. As you can see, the place needs a little makeover. I will keep you folks updated on our progress through photos and more! We are very excited to share this gem with our local market!

I shot photos for one of the features in the last issue of The Stanton Magazine. I absolutely adore photography and while I don't get to do it much, I'll take any chance I get.

The girl in the photos is Raquel--my brother's gorgeous girlfriend. Over Easter weekend, she came over to my parents' house and my makeup/hairdresser friend, Jessica and I decided to play dress up with her. Jessica put some feather extensions in her hair and I shot the photos in our very own backyard. I'm glad the rose bushes were cooperating. You guys like?

Chopped locks

I responsibly chopped all my hair off yesterday. I say I did it responsibly because it was something I contemplated for a really long time. I'm still in shock but nonetheless grateful for my 10 minute blow-dry. I've gotten mixed opinions about it, mostly good. Can't make everyone happy but I guess all that matters is that I like it, right?!

What's with these feather extensions? And why do I love them?! I noticed them on a fabulous tran while in MAGIC-Las Vegas and haven't stopped thinking about them ever since. My friend, Farzad's adorable cousin got them, and now I get a call from my bff in NYC telling me he sees them all over the place and loves them. So naturally I want them too, right?

I've been contemplating a haircut for weeks and I think I've finally come up with something I like (will post photos). And while I'm at it, I'm going to try and have a few feathers clipped in for good luck ;)

I've been a fringe enthusiast for a bit now. I know that for a fact because:

1) today while watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I happened to appreciate Sloane Peterson's white fringe jacket a lot more than when I watched the movie some 10-15 years ago;
and 2) The other day my mom and I walked in to Michael Kors and I almost choked when I saw the BEAUTIFUL fringe crescent hobo in gray suede!

Sadly, I am not in the market for a $900 bag, but I am happy to have recently found a cheaper option at H&M. With that said, you can bet your fine asses I will stalk MK until that bag is at least 30% off. And that is all...good night.

What a six years it's been for the Mulleavy sisters since debuting their crazy-genius line, Rodarte. They launched their brand, everyone loved it, partnered up with MAC for a Juarez-themed line (uhh...that didn't go so well), created costumes for award-winning Black Swan, everyone loved that, and now they've got an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles. I'd love to get a close-up of those ballerina costumes. More about the exhibit here.
